My Thoughts on the EA Play Conference (June 11)
What I immediately noticed about the press conference was the sense of community, which I really liked. But regardless, this conference was a little bit lackluster. The audience, to me, didn’t seem to be excited about the conference. But, I have to give EA credit by saying that at least they tried. They start off with a drumline which didn’t really play that well and didn’t really need them, to be honest.
I think it is awesome that they are incorporating a cinematic story element to the new Madden game as well as utilizing the skills of Acadamy-award winner Mahershala Ali, as well as JR Lemon and others, as characters within the game. Devin Wade is an all star high school quarter backer who wants to make it big in the NFL. Through story mode, players will experience the trials and errors of Devin as he makes it all happen. This does seem to be a “choices matter” type of game.
My favorite part of the conference was the introduction of Star Wars Battlefront 2. The only one who really dominated the stage and the conference was Janina Gavankar, actress and star of the new Star Wars game, playing as Iden Versio the commander of an Imperial force. I think what would have really been interesting was to see the actress in the costume. The audience, to me, seemed much more livelier during the Star Wars segment than before. I really didn’t enjoy watching the gameplay near the end; even though they showed some of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars franchise. The players who were playing the game were pretty bad at the game. One player crashed dived into one of the buildings and crashed.
EA teamed up with Hazelight, creators of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons to create a crime noir-ish game that looks to be set seeming between the 1960s and ’70s, at least from what I can tell from the trailer. This game immediately caught my attention and my interest. The music, the atmosphere, the graphics as well as the storyline of this game seems fantastic. This game reminds me of Prison Break. These two men do not know each other but they have a common goal. This is a Co-Op, story driven game that forces these two men, Leo and Vincent, as well as the players to work together as a team, partners in crime to be specific. A Way Out will be released in early 2018.
Bioware and EA teamed up to create a multiplayer game set in a futuristic “…shared-world action RPG.” game. Four players can team up to tackle the terrain as well as other beings that pose a threat. The trailer looks awesome.
Be sure to check out Clare’s highlights on the conference as well.
EA tried to make this a fun, energetic conference. It was an okay conference. Even the audience didn’t seemed to have that enthusiasm that EA probably was expecting and looking for. There were some really good aspects to the press conference, i.e. the Star Wars segment as well as A Way Out and Battlefield 1: In The Name of the Tsar. But also there were some fails. Jesse Weldon’s small segment to introduce the next game for instance was embarrassing as he forgot what to say after introducing himself. Honestly, I think he froze up. It happens to all of us. The whole thing, overall, felt rushed and was a bit lackluster. So tell us what you thought about the conference.
